My Window: A Clear View of Stupidity

windowWhole.jpgWow. Three posts in one day. That’s gotta be a new record. I’ve just been feeling the itch to write instead of reading. It probably has to do with spring finally getting here.

Which brings me to my brief fit of window spring cleaning.

I’ve got these two small windows, that should probably just be one big window except for a structural beam in the middle. It’s not clear to me how they couldn’t have known where to put the window to avoid it. There’s plenty of space and it’s not like this was a cheap architectural job. I mean, I live on the 7th floor of a 10 story building.

Anyway, today isn’t the warmest day we’ve had so far, but not so bad the returning birds arent’ outside chirping away. That was one of the reasons I decided to open my windows and let some fresh air and happy bird chirps in.

My room hardly got any brighter when I raised my blinds all the way up. I’ve only been living here a couple months and I’d just assumed that the gloomy light in my room was because of the gloomy winter weather outside. Then I took a better look at the window and realized it was filthy and not only that there wasn’t just one window.

windowDirty.jpgNo, it goes like this: mini-blinds, filthy wooden window frame, rusted dirty screen, and another cheap tin and plastic filthy window pane. All on separate tracks. It’s important to note here that not only is the outside glass covered, in what could be decades of scum, as well as the inner window pane. It’s possible the outer window frame was added over the inner frame without even cleaning it.

On top of that the screen in between the two windows is kind of rusted and mildewed. This is the view out of it with the mini-blinds raised. The picture on the bottom is My world has been unnecessarily gray lately. It all makes sense now. Stupid window.

windowClean.jpgWhen I tried to clean them I realized that there wasn’t any way to wash any higher up than about a quarter of the window because of this disaster of a window’s design. Nonetheless, I washed a quarter of it and a quarter of the outside window. Then I realized that I could just leave the outer pane and the screen all the way up and just use the inner glass one. This is what it looked like through just the semi-clean inner window.  It even looks happy.

And so ends the saga of how Tao bested a stupid window and brought light to his room. Join me next week when I’ll take on my elevator and bring levity to my 7th floor abode.

What a difference in your window! A little bit at a time, eh? Step by step. When I was teaching in Jamaica a few summers ago, I started feeding a starving stray dog that had a couple of starving puppies. I didn’t have much food, so we all ate rice together on the front porch every night. One of my Jamaican colleagues told me I shouldn’t be feeding the dogs because they were just going to starve again when I left at the end of my six weeks there. I thought about that. But then it hit me and now my thinking on “bandaids” of change is totally different: At least they won’t starve for the short time I can help them. A little bit at a time….
