Us Yellowdog Democrats in Texas are still howling with happiness and hopefulness because of Barack and Joe's win yesterday. Texas may have gone electorally to McCain, but it wasn't because of a lack of effort by us dogs. I have to argue a bit with you about your statement that mentally impaired children can now dream of becoming president because of our Texan, George Bush. George isn't mentally impaired. He's mentally LAZY. He's been allowed to good ol' boy and bamboozle his way through life and in some ways, I think comparing him to children who are mentally disabled is an insult to those children. Just my two Texas cents.

Good work on your canvassing for Barack. I know it's not easy. What I tell people is that if they believe in fair taxation, women's rights and attempts at diplomacy before war, then the Democrats are the only choice. That seems to have some impact on people.

Nope, that's one of Jerry Austin's fields right next to the property. We couldn't actually find the field we went looking for. I think it's all grown up. We didn't go looking for the south field at all.

Having grown up in the Deep South during the white supremacy of the 60s and 70s, I was in awe and hope last night when Barack Obama won enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee for president. I was also surprised by how emotional the moment was for me. Out of nowhere, I just burst into tears. Maybe the youth and progressives and people of the United States who really care about the earth and people other than themselves will finally get this country back on track. Let's hope so. Go Barack!

Ah, vinyl. Those were the days. We used to make bowls out of old scratched records by heating them up in an oven and then molding them into whatever shape we wanted the bowl. A record player was one of the only "fun" bits of technology my family had when we were young kids.

Until our electorate decides that they deserve fair wages and financial equality, we will continue to sink into a society where the top 10% own most of the wealth, whether they earned it or not. I hope one day to hear people discussing the fact that democracy and capitalism are not one in the same.

I agree. I've become committed to working within walking distance of where I live. Hopefully those will be the same place one of these days. Thanks for posting this video. I haven't watched it yet but plan to this weekend. If Al Gore had stuck by his dedication to the environment when he ran for president, he would have attracted more of the voters who ended up voting for the Greens.

This is an important presentation. Thank you for spreading it. Al is tuning in to the most strategic level of change - a change of consciousness. To rescue ourselves, we have to become something most of us currently can't imagine. Julia Butterfly Hill spent two years living in a redwood tree to save a forest from being cut. You know the phrase, Throw It Away? Julia says, being conscious is realizing there is no Away. Consciousness looks for a basis in reality of this sense of separation we have from each other and from nature. Finding no basis in fact for the feeling of separation, consciousness begins dissolving it. The old sense of self as separate begins to die. What arises in its place is interconnectedness, interdependence, fields of energy patterns, presence, thoughts that arise from the earth, the cosmos, thoughts that are not owned.
The Earth is a conscious being on a scale that is truly unimaginable to those who only see it as resources to exploit. And what a mind blower to realize that the consciousness we have always claimed as our own, in truth, is a fragment of Earth consciousness. And as more and more realize this truth, these fragments of consciousness join together in a contagious wave of awareness that is just what Al is trying to evoke in this presentation. Amen, Al.

What a difference in your window! A little bit at a time, eh? Step by step. When I was teaching in Jamaica a few summers ago, I started feeding a starving stray dog that had a couple of starving puppies. I didn't have much food, so we all ate rice together on the front porch every night. One of my Jamaican colleagues told me I shouldn't be feeding the dogs because they were just going to starve again when I left at the end of my six weeks there. I thought about that. But then it hit me and now my thinking on "bandaids" of change is totally different: At least they won't starve for the short time I can help them. A little bit at a time....

I was in Mexico City before the 68 Olympics. The US had pressured Mexico to make sure everything went smoothly. They got the message. There was a great peasant movement lead by students at the University at that time. The Mexican government sent troops and tanks onto the campus and killed hundreds and disappeared thousands. I walked through the campus riddled with machine gun bullet holes. I met student survivors. They were clear that this attach was inspired by the US government. They made quite an impression on me. And all week, the CSN&Y song - Four Dead in Ohio keeps going through my mind. What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?
I remember the map I had of Mexico City then. The city was surrounded by these large green areas. In most maps, you would think this represented national forests or parks. I went to this green area. It was miles and miles of slums. This is where millions of peasants lived. Crowded. Open sewers. No good water. Kids scavenging dumps for something edible. How can you run when you know?

During the Summer Olympics in '68, a group of athletes formed the Olympic Project for Human Rights. The now-famous photo of American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists in protest of the lack of civil rights for Black Americans caused a huge stink at the time, but was well worth the sacrifice made by the two sprinters. Let's hope the protests this year will raise awareness and result in more rights for the people of China and Tibet.
